The Keeper of the Eternal Watch at Nethergarde, the Arch-Wizard Khadgar was, at his time, one of the most powerful mortal magi in the world.

Khadgar was sent to Karazhan to assist the Magus, Medivh, by the Kirin Tor of Dalaran. There, he met the strange, eccentric, but kindly wizard, who enlisted Khadgar's aid to do some menial tasks around the tower. But in his time, he learned much. Medivh told him of his mother, Magna Aegwynn, the birth of the world, the battle of the forces of light and the Great Dark Beyond, and the Order of Tirisfal. Khadgar continued to impress his superiors in Dalaran and grew in magical talent as well as insight.

But in Dalaran, many of his tutors were disappearing or were found violently murdered, and talk of demons was in the correspondence Medivh recieved. And a strange woman was roaming the halls of Karazhan, spying on Khadgar when he had visions. He finally caught up with her and found her to be an orc. Furious, he demanded an explanation from Medivh, who told Khadgar that Garona was an emissary from the Horde he had hoped to use to make peace. Garona and Khadgar met and had a begrudging respect for one another, which eventually grew into a friendship. But when they survived an attack by a demon that Medivh insisted was never there, they began to grow suspicious of the Magus' motives.

When Khadgar and Garona confronted Medivh, he revealed himself to be Sargeras, bonded with the unborn cells of Aegwynn's womb. The two fled Karazhan and made to warn Llane and Lothar. Llane listened to their case, and then sent them back to Karazhan with Lothar to end Medivh's threat once and for all.

They tracked Medivh to an underground chamber, and faced off with him in a climactic battle of magic and might. But during the battle, Medivh cast a hex on Khadgar, aging him by decades. But in the end, Khadgar finished Medivh, and the Magus was defeated. Garona had disappeared.

Khadgar packed up his things and left Karazhan, but not before chatting with a strange, familiar apparition from the future. Then he turned, and left the tower forever.

He was recognized for his services as a mighty Conjurer, and travelled with the Azerothiens to Lordaeron, though while they went to Terenas, he went to the Kirin Tor of Dalaran.

Khadgar wished to unravel the secret mysteries of the Dark Portal, and during the Second War, was in deep study with the acolytes of Dalaran to discern the magical properties of the Portal. This came in especially useful, for after the battle at the Portal, only the mystical powers of Khagdar could destroy the energies of the Portal, but even then, he failed, for despite all his powers focused on the Dark Portal, the rift survived his magical onslaught.

The Kirin Tor, at the advice of Khadgar, travelled to Azeroth and built the Citadel of Nethergarde in the Black Morass. Khadgar remained there to continue his study of the Dark Portal and safeguard it against being used again.

In the year of 606, however, that dreaded day came when a freak darkness engulfed the Black Morass, and sounds of many bodies moving towards the rift could be heard. When the darkness lifted, the Portal had reformed, and the Bleeding Hollow Clan had fled back to their own world of Draenor.

Khadgar began to suspect another Horde offensive, and soon the Portal was reopened and the Orcs attacked Nethergarde. Ner'zhul began to make forays into Azeroth to steal magical items from various places, and Khadgar began to suspect that the Orcs were attempting to open more rifts. These were confirmed when Ner'zhul launched an assault on New Stormwind, and when he left, the Book of Medivh was missing.

Khadgar led the trek into Draenor, aided by the forces of the Alliance, he made his way through Draenor, trying to hunt down Ner'zhul, until finally, the shaman himself managed to use the Sceptre of Sargeras to open new rifts. It was then that Draenor began to die.

Knowing that the destruction of Draenor would surely cause a cataclysm of magnificent proportions in Azeroth, Khadgar knew that he must close the portal from the side of Draenor. He did so with the Book of Medivh and Skull of Gul'dan, but was left stranded on the dying world. So, taking their chances, Khadgar's forces fled into one of Ner'zhul's rifts, and the Twisting Nether beyond, never to be seen in Azeroth again.
