Leader of the Frostwolf Clan, Durotan first suspected Gul'dan treacherous deals with demons after the First Crossing. When he tried to oppose the Warlock, Gul'dan used Blackhand to banish Durotan and the Frostwolves from the Horde.

Many years later, as the fires of war began to subside, Durotan and his mate, Draka, bore a son. They, along with Durotan's faithful frost wolf companion, Sharptooth, travelled to meet with his good friend, Orgrim Doomhammer, and he informed him of the treachery of Gul'dan. Doomhammer vowed that Gul'dan's actions would not go unpunished, and sent Durotan and his family from his camp with one of his guards.

But the guard betrayed his chieftain to Stormreaver assassins, who hunted down Durotan and his family and killed them, save for the unnamed son.

Durotan's legacy of honour and savagery would live on only through his son, to be named Thrall, the revolutionary future Warchief of the Horde.

After the Invasion of Kalimdor, Thrall took his people and founded the nation of Durotar, named after his heroic father.
