Mal'Ganis, the evil and insidious Nethrezim Dreadlord of the Scourge was the emissary of darkness, sent by Tichondrius to oversee the corruption of the human masses through plagued grain. However, Ner'zhul, the malevolent Lich King, had other plans in mind.
Mal'Ganis' servant, Kel'Thuzad, who was truly only loyal to the intentions of the Lich King rather than that of the Legion, was successfully plaguing the people of Brill when he was found out by the young prince, Arthas, and his companion, the wizardress Jaina Proudmoore. They followed him back to Andorhal, where he told them of Mal'Ganis, who was secretly amassing power outside of Stratholme.
It was perhaps the incidents at Hearthglen that doomed Mal'Ganis forever. When Arthas arrived, the people were already infected with the Plague, and turned into undead creatures before his eyes. Hardened and vengeful, Arthas travelled to Stratholme and Mal'Ganis.
Upon finding, to his horror, that the people had, too, already been infected, Arthas was forced to slaughter the denizens of Stratholme before they became zombies. Mal'Ganis then appeared to him, and began to claim the souls of the people of Stratholme for later use. Arthas raced the dreadlord, killing the humans before Mal'Ganis could get to them. Finally, the time came to battle, but rather than fight him in Stratholme, Mal'Ganis opted to battle on home soil. He lured Arthas to Northrend.
Mal'Ganis waited quietly for the Lich King's plan to unfold, and everything went according to plan. Arthas claimed the soul-stealing runeblade, Frostmourne, and was claimed by the darkness. Finally, after wreaking his way through Mal'Ganis' defenses, the two finally squared off. The Dreadlord, confident that they were now on the same side, mocked Arthas. However, Arthas suddenly struck out, and killed Mal'Ganis on instruction of the Lich King, a realization that Mal'Ganis came to only too late.
