Chieftain of the mighty Warsong Clan, Grom Hellscream grew to become one of the most powerful of the Old Clans on Draenor.
When Gul'dan began the new deal with the treacherous demons, Hellscream was among the chieftains who drank the blood of Mannoroth, damning their people with the curse of demonic power and might.
Despite his desire to go into Azeroth with the first wave. Hellscream banded together reluctantly under the banner of a new Horde led by Ner'zhul, who he never entirely trusted. Hellscream finally fulfilled his dream of invading Azeroth, and slaughtered all the humans in his wake.
Though he battled bravely for Ner'zhul, the treacherous Warchief abandoned the Warsongs in Azeroth, and after the Dark Portal was eternally closed, he was left stranded in a world that hated his kind. Grom Hellscream ran rampant throughout Azeroth and Khaz Modan, fleeing from the human hunters and remaining aloof and unknown, all the time, he began to realize what the demonic warlock magics had done to the Horde, and that the mindless slaughter of the innocent had done nothing for the glory of the Horde.
Many years later, he came upon Thrall, a young orc raised by humans, and wishing to investigate the shamanistic origins of the Horde. Grom was able to relate to Thrall the tale of the Frostwolf Clan, the clan banished from the Horde into the Alterac Mountains, who Thrall was a member of. After growing used to life as an orc, and learning orcish tongue from Hellscream, Thrall left to seek out his clan.
It was not long after that Hellscream found Doomhammer. The Warchief was very interested in Thrall, and left to Alterac to find him.
When Doomhammer returned to Hellscream, he had Thrall and Drak'Thar at his side and the Frostwolves at his back.
What followed was the liberation of the orcs from the internment camps. Led by Doomhammer, who resumed his long-dormant roll of Warchief, Thrall helped to free the Orcs under guard by the Humans, until they reached their fifth camp, where the humans unexpectedly ambushed them. During the battle, Doomhammer was killed, and in his dying breath, passed the mantle of Warchief onto Thrall.
Thrall attacked Durnholde, the head of the internment camp system, and freed all the remaining Orcs to lead them back to their shamanistic roots.
Hellscream was inspired and renewed by Thrall's revolutionary leadership, and vowed to follow him unquestioningly.
When Thrall received a vision to travel to Kalimdor, he ordered the Horde to gather so that they might leave the human lands forever. When Hellscream did not arrive, Thrall investigated, and found that Grom had been captured by humans. Upon freeing him, Grom masterminded the theft of the human ships, and once the orcs had arrived, they left across the sea to Kalimdor.
The ships, however, came upon the Maelstrom in the centre of the world, and many of the ships were drowned or scattered, and all were in disarray when they landed on Kalimdor.
Grom, separated from Thrall, found that humans had, too, come to Kalimdor, and were led by a human sorceress named Jaina Proudmoore. When they discovered the orcs there, the human forces believed that the orcs had followed them, and Grom was quick to begin a battle. Thrall arrived then, and demanded an explanation from Grom. Grom told him what had happened, and Thrall, pacified, ordered Grom to stay away from the humans until they had come up with a better strategy.
Grom, caught up in a bloodlust, heedlessly attacked all the nearby human settlements, despite Thrall's orders. The battle that ensued on the mountain fell many humans and orcs on both sides. When the battle was done, Thrall berated Grom for his insubordination, but Grom, in turn, harassed Thrall, saying that he was running from his enemies. Thrall, seeing that Grom was in a bloodlust, ordered that he stay behind and establish a base.
As Grom worked reluctantly to make a base camp, he gathered lumber from the forests of Ashenvale. When whispers began to come from the trees, many of the Warsong clan believed that the wood was haunted, and became uneasy. Grom, however, heedlessly continued to harvest lumber. Soon, they were attacked by Sentinels, but they battled them back tirelessly. This, however, attracted the attention of a much more powerful being.
Upon establishing a base camp in Moonglade, Grom and the Warsong Clan was suddenly attacked by the demigod Cenarius with an insurmountable army of night elves at his back. They pushed the orcs back to their last base, but devastated most of what they had built.
A witch doctor told Grom that he sensed a magical energy in the area, and thought that perhaps they could use it to battle Cenarius. Grom agreed, and set out to find a fountain. After defeating the satyrs that guarded it, the witch doctor told Grom that he smelled a curse from the fountain, but Grom, heedless of the warnings of his underlings, drank the dark waters of the fountain, and it returned him once more to the being of strength and chaos he had been on Draenor. His clan drank, as well, and with their newfound powers, they launched a counter-attack against Cenarius' forces, and killed the demigod.
Soon, Grom was confronted by none other than Mannoroth himself. Disbelieving, Grom tried to defend his actions, but Mannoroth insisted that the orcs were his once again, despite Hellscream's pleas.
Meanwhile, Thrall discovered Grom's corruption. Acquiring Cairne Bloodhoof and Jaina Proudmoore as allies, Thrall battled the Warsong clan and the demons they summoned to reach Grom. Grom's corruption had spread to his mind, and he now believed himself to be doing what was right for the Horde. Using Jaina's soul gem, Thrall trapped Grom's essence, and quickly raced back to the ritual circle Jaina had erected. With the combined effort of Jaina, her priests and sorcerers, and Thrall and his shamans, the corruption was lifted from Grom, and he knew now what must be done.
Mannoroth, hiding in the craters made by the falling infernals, was waiting for them.
Thrall and Hellscream cautiously entered the canyon, where they found themselves stalked by the malevolent presence of Mannoroth. The Pit Lord defiantly claimed their race to belong to him, and when Thrall attacked him, the blow was as nothing. When Mannoroth struck back, however, Thrall was nearly incapacitated. Mannoroth turned to Hellscream then, goading his bloodlust. Grom rose and attacked Mannoroth, shattering his armour, and delivering one fatal blow. But in the fiery chaos that erupted from the demon's death, Grom fell.
As the demon curse, and the bloody haze in Grom's eyes lifted, he quietly died in Thrall's arms.
